Also known as neodymium magnets, are a type of rare-earth permanent magnet composed of neodymium, iron, and boron (Nd2Fe14B). Discovered in 1982 by Masato Sagawa of Sumitomo Special Metals, these magnets have the highest magnetic energy product (BHmax) among all the magnets discovered until then, making them highly valuable in various applications. In the aerospace industry, NdFeB magnets play a crucial role due to their exceptional magnetic properties.

One of the primary applications of NdFeB magnets in aerospace is in rare-earth permanent magnet motors (REPM). These motors are widely used in various electrical systems on aircraft, such as flight control systems, environmental control systems, braking systems, fuel systems, and starter systems. The use of NdFeB magnets in these motors allows for the creation of strong permanent magnetic fields without the need for additional energy after magnetization. This results in motors that are not only highly efficient but also structurally simple, reliable, compact, and lightweight.

In flight control systems, NdFeB magnets are used in the manufacturing of various magnetic control components, such as magnetic switches and valves. These components enable rapid and accurate responses under magnetic fields, ensuring the sensitivity and reliability of the flight control system. Additionally, NdFeB magnets are used in magnetic storage devices within flight control computers, storing flight data and instructions to support intelligent aircraft operation.

Aerospace engines, often regarded as the "heart" of an aircraft, directly impact its flight efficiency and safety. NdFeB magnets are extensively utilized in the manufacture of permanent magnets for aerospace engines due to their high magnetic energy product and stable magnetic properties. These magnets provide a stable magnetic field, ensuring the efficient operation of the engines. Furthermore, NdFeB magnets are employed in the manufacturing of engine sensors, which monitor the engine's operating status in real-time, thereby enhancing flight safety.

Modern aircraft navigation systems rely on precise magnetic sensors to perceive changes in the Earth's magnetic field and determine the aircraft's position and heading. NdFeB magnetic sensors, known for their high sensitivity and stability, serve as critical components in these navigation systems. They accurately capture Earth's magnetic field signals, providing pilots with reliable navigation information and ensuring the accuracy of flight paths.

Electric braking systems, which use NdFeB magnet-based brushless DC motors, have become increasingly competitive with hydraulic braking systems. The response frequency of electromechanical actuators using NdFeB magnets is significantly higher than that of hydraulic actuators, contributing to improved braking performance.

In summary, NdFeB magnets have extensive and profound applications in the aerospace field. They play a vital role in enhancing the performance and safety of aerospace technology. As technology continues to advance, the applications of NdFeB magnets in aerospace will undoubtedly expand, fueling the development of future aerospace endeavors.
